The Importance Of Special Education Referral Process
When a student is performing below grade level, there are many steps that should be taken in the road to determine whether or not he or she qualifies for special education. Many people are involved in the referral process, some of which include the parents of the child, the general education teacher, and the special education teacher. The ultimate goal is to make sure the student is receiving the best accommodations and modifications to be successful in the classroom. As long as this is kept at the forefront of all the parties involved, the child will achieve in school. Every school has a plan in place about how their special education referral process takes place. Identifying that a student is performing below grade level is the first step. Once this is done, a Prereferral Intervention Team (PIT) meets to determine what interventions can be put in place to help the student while they are in the general education classroom (Smith, Polloway, Patton, Dowdy, 2012, p. 70). The Universal Design for Learning is one strategy that can be implemented in the general education classroom to help students of all abilities succeed. This strategy focuses on using differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including implementing multiple means of representation, multiple means of engagement, and multiple means of expression (Smith et al., 2012, p. 72-73).
